Benefits of Homeschooling

In the 5 years I have been assisting parents to homeschool their children with specific learning difficulties, I have found many benefits for the learners. The kind of assistance I provide is small groups where both parents work or are just simply unable to teach their own kids. The group I run is never larger than 9 learners, all with specific learning difficulties - hardly commercial as seen in other provisions in Malaysia.

Our learners benefit in many ways from this small group setting. Typically, they have come to us either after a poor experience in the mainstream or having been rejected altogether from joining a mainstream international / private school in Kuala Lumpur. The earliest benefit seen is the increase in self-esteem and motivation to work. Self confidence is also high as they are taught and encouraged to ask questions and explore for answers more in a homeschool environment than in traditional lecture type school environments.

The homeschool is set up in such a way that it feels more like home than school - from having carpets and curtains around, to staff and children eating, playing and studying together - as you would do at home. Children are taught from the onset to respect each other, be gracious and courteous to one another, help and play with every other. No one is excluded from group activities and each one contributes at their own level in every activity. Respecting one another for who they are and accepting people for who they are, are important aspects of personality that is seldom developed positively in a mainstream environment.

Some other benefits include the fact that homeschoolers tend to grow up being able to show empathy for others and consideration than their counterparts in mainstream school who are subjected to conforming to peer pressure. They are less selfish and show kindness towards each other.  This can be achieved due to the small setting and also the approach that is used in homeschooling.

Being able to progress faster in one academic subject and going slower in another is also possible within a homeschool. Children are able to focus on specific areas of interest and pursue that in more depth than topics that are low interest to a student. Do read my other posts on Facebook about some success stories of children who have been homeschooled and made it to top notch Universities!

Homeschooling offer the learner with a stress free flexible schedule to study combined with periods of play or exploratory study which traditional classrooms cannot accommodate.

Mind you, if you are sending your child to a "homeschool" where it is no different that mainstream except where cost is concerned, then you are not going to see these benefits at all I have seen some homeschools here where 20 students are stuck in a small room for hours on end with no time to interact and no place to move around. Unqualified  people ranging from high school dropouts to people who are jobless act as "teachers" in these "budget-cutting" places hiding under the guise of "homeschool"!

All in all, I feel that if carried out properly, homeschooling can be beneficial to learners of all ages. Just be aware of what it should be, dear parents!:)
