The Ministry of Education in Malaysia published a report in 2006 stating that 163 835 Year One (aged 6:1 – 7:11) pupils faced reading and writing problems. Of this, the Ministry has not declared or taken measures to identify the percentage of these students who might be facing specific reading difficulties such as dyslexia. This report was followed up by research of another cohort of 500000 Year 5 pupils facing reading problems, thus, academic failure.
